Wonder whether you've tried XFCE (edit: I meant Linux Mint XFCE) yet? I tried it in a VM and I like it but in my opinion it requires modification to look as good as Cinnamon. (Although there is Compiz with the wobbly windows already installed on XFCE/Mate so :D)
